If you need somebody right now.

Everywhere else on this site we are relentless. Here we are not. These are real, free, staffed lines.

If you are in immediate danger, or you are thinking about ending your life, please use the first block. It is free, it is confidential, and you do not have to be in a crisis “bad enough” to deserve it. That’s not a thing.

United States — 24/7

  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline — call or text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org. Suicidal crisis, mental health crisis, substance use crisis. Answered by a national network of crisis centres.
  • Crisis Text Line — text HOME to 741741. Free, 24/7, a trained human on the other end. crisistextline.org
  • Veterans Crisis Line — dial 988 then press 1, or text 838255.

Outside the US: the Find A Helpline directory lists vetted free lines by country.

When somebody has died

Bereavement is not a crisis line problem, but it is absolutely a “call somebody” problem, and most people wait far too long. A few starting points that are free or low cost:

  • The Compassionate Friends — peer support for parents, grandparents and siblings after the death of a child, with chapters worldwide.
  • The Dougy Center — grief support for children, teens and their families, plus a directory of local programmes.
  • AFSP — I’ve Lost Someone — specifically for people bereaved by suicide, where the usual grief advice often does not fit.
  • Hospice Foundation of America — bereavement resources; many local hospices run free grief groups open to anyone, whether or not your person was ever their patient. Most people do not know this.

When it was a particular kind of death

General grief support is often a bad fit for these, because the usual advice quietly assumes a death nobody has to explain. These groups are made of people who had the same one.

If you cannot afford to bury or cremate them

This is far more common than anybody admits, and being broke at the worst moment of your life is not a moral failing. A few things that exist and that almost nobody mentions:

  • Social Security lump-sum death payment — $255. A one-off to an eligible surviving spouse, or failing that to eligible children. It is not indexed and has not moved in decades, so it is close to symbolic, but it is yours and you have to ask. SSA details
  • Veterans. The VA pays a burial allowance and a plot allowance for eligible veterans, plus free burial in a national cemetery, a headstone and a flag. Rates change — for deaths on or after 1 October 2025 the non-service-connected allowance and plot allowance were $1,002 each. Check the current figure. VA burial benefits
  • Your county. Every US state has some form of indigent or county burial provision. It is means-tested, the paperwork is grim, and it is real. Call your county coroner, medical examiner, or social services and use the words “indigent burial assistance”.
  • Crime victims. If the death was a homicide or other violent crime, your state victim-compensation programme very likely covers funeral expenses. Start at ovc.ojp.gov.
  • Body donation. Some medical schools cover transport and cremation and return the ashes to you at no cost. Terms vary enormously and not every donor is accepted, so it cannot be your only plan — but it is a legitimate option, not a last resort to be ashamed of.
  • You can also just say no. The cheapest lawful disposition is direct cremation with no service, and you are allowed to choose it, hold whatever memorial you want later in a park for free, and owe nobody an explanation.

When a pet has died

This is real grief and it is routinely treated as a lesser one. It is not. These are staffed lines run by veterinary schools and welfare organisations, and they exist precisely because people are ashamed to be this wrecked over an animal. Hours vary, so check the page before you dial.
