The memorial aisle is one of the last retail categories where almost nobody reviews anything honestly, for a reason that is genuinely sympathetic: it feels grotesque to give your grandmother’s urn three stars.

We think that’s backwards. The absence of honest reviews is exactly why a moulded resin urn costs $340 and the listing photo is shot like a perfume ad. Somebody has to say “this lid does not seal and the felt is glued on crooked”, and it may as well be us, because we have no funeral home to protect.

How we review

  • Does it hold what it says it holds? Adult remains run roughly 200 cubic inches. A surprising number of “adult” urns do not, and you find out at the worst possible moment.
  • Does it seal, and can you open it again? Screw threads, gaskets, or a lid that sits there hoping. Matters enormously if it is going to travel, get scattered, or get split.
  • Is the price the material or the moment? We will tell you when you are paying for brass and when you are paying for the fact that you are sad and in a hurry.
  • Will you want to look at it in five years? Most urn design is aimed at the week of the funeral. You have to live with the thing for decades.
